Description of scheduled classes:

Week 1
Ceramic Clay: playing with sand and mud was only a beginning to this versatile art form

June 16-20

This week’s activities will introduce students to the process of hand building, conceptual three-dimensional sculpture and pottery.

Materials: ceramic clay (low and high-fired), clear low fire glaze.

Note: In addition to hand building, students will receive individual instruction on a pottery wheel. All projects will require adequate drying time to ensure successful firing. All student projects will be kiln fired and returned to students.

Week 2
Artist’s Alchemy… make your own art supplies:

June 23-27

This week, a wizard’s treasure trove of age old recipes awaits the young artist. Students will have the opportunity to concoct their own art supplies. The magic continues as the student tests and discovers the artistic value of their new materials through experiential activity.

Note: Students will receive copies of recipes and make a “potion book”. Students will receive samples for home demonstration and activity.

Week 3
Mosaic:

June 30 – July 3

Project work will introduce students to the ancient art form of mosaic. The process will provide students with experience in design, composition, color, and texture. Instruction will allow students to successfully experience the craft and create projects that reflect their craftsmanship and creativity.

Materials: A variety of beans, seeds and beads, ceramic tile, stained glass, glass and ceramic trinkets, wood, cardboard, ceramic plant pots, professional grade tile and cement grout.

 

Week 4
Painting… the fine art experience:

July 7 - 11

This week’s activity will offer the student artist the opportunity to develop their painting skills and follow their own sense of inspiration in design and composition. We will explore varied techniques, materials, brushes, and textures characteristic of this fine art media. Instruction in color theory will allow the students the opportunity to enhance their palette and discover new perspectives.

Materials: Water color paint, acrylic paint, oil paint, gesso (oil paint extenders and cleaner will be handled by the instructor), canvas, multiple grades of paper.

Week 5
Drawing… the fine art experience:

July 14-18

Style, technique and composition will introduce students to several different ways of expressing their ideas using drawing materials. Color theory will enhance the student’s skill development.

Materials: Graphite pencil, pastel, charcoal, Conté crayon, colored pencil, pen and ink, wax crayon, chalk, varied grades of paper.

Week 6
Word and Symbol Wizardry: Graphic Art, Calligraphy and Illustration

July 21-25

The projects this week will compliment a variety of graphic art and calligraphy technique. Students will have the opportunity to blend their original ideas with metaphor. Projects will inspire self-expression and originality. Projects will include poster boards, wall hanging, flags, booklets, greeting cards and frames. Students will be introduced to a variety of calligraphy techniques and enjoy using a variety of different graphic pens and brushes. A printing press will be available to further the student’s creative options.

Materials: Watercolor, acrylic paint, pen and ink, colored pencil, pastel, chalk, wax crayon, fabric dye, water soluble ink, multipl

Week 7
Textile Art… weaving, knotting, sewing, beading, appliqué, tie dye, batik and fabric painting, printing and pattern making!:

July 28 - August 1

A full week of studio-based creative crafts and original projects is sure to inspire the young designer. Instruction will offer students the opportunity to develop and apply new skills.

Materials: Fabric, ribbon, cordage, fibers, paper, natural materials, fabric dyes and paint, polymer clay, acrylic paint.

Week 8
Miniature Sculpture:

August 4 - 8

Projects this week are sure to engage the young artist’s imagination and conceptual field of expression. Projects will include etching, carving and sculpting. Instruction for technique, composition, and application will encourage the student to develop their original ideas.

Materials: Polymer clay, plaster, wax, plaster gauze, natural materials.
